Be cool: Taking care of pets in warmer weather

August 15th, 2020

August is definitely right up there as being one of the warmest months of the year. At Renaissance Square, we love pets. Here are some quick tips to help you and your pet stay cool and comfortable this month. If you’re thinking of taking your pup for a walk, first touch the sidewalk. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s undeniably too hot for their paws. Best to take them for walks in the early morning and after sundown. Never ever leave a pet in a vehicle. Animals are affected by heat tremendously more than us humans. Cracking a window will not work. Leave your pet at home to keep them safe while you’re running errands. At home, it can also get warm. Make sure to leave the a/c on for them. It’s also helpful to have multiple bowls of fresh water throughout your residence to make it convenient for your pet to stay hydrated. Another tip would be to brush them daily to remove shedding hair that can trap in heat. We really like the Furminator brush because it easily removes that pesky undercoat and it’s so easy to use. Be on the lookout to make sure they are doing their normal stuff: eating, drinking water, peeing and pooping. If something seems odd, check with your veterinarian immediately. Signs of heat strokes in pets include panting, vomiting, stumbling, seizures and more. Have the phone number of the vet handy at all times just to be safer. We want you and your pet to have a wonderful summer in our smoke-free, pet-friendly apartment community.
